Shared Scripture Study
“Ignorance of Scripture is Ignorance of Jesus Christ”
St. Jerome
The Shared Scripture Program of Saint Victor Catholic Church exists to initiate, promote and present faithful, dynamic catechetical programs involving, or related to, Sacred Scripture. All of the programs presented are grounded in the Catechism of the Catholic Church and are faithful to the teachings of the Magisterium (the official teaching office of the Catholic Church).
The study programs are Christocentric because Christ is the unique Word of Sacred Scripture. “Through all the words of Sacred Scripture, God speaks only one single Word, His one Utterance in whom He expresses Himself completely.” (CCC 102). That one “Utterance”, that “one single Word” is His only Son, Jesus Christ. “In Sacred Scripture, the Church constantly finds her nourishment and her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human word, “but as what it really is, the word of God.” In the sacred books, the Father, who is in heaven comes lovingly to meet His children, and talks with them.” (CCC 104) “Christians, therefore, read the Old Testament in the light of Christ crucified and risen. As St. Augustine noted, “the New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is unveiled in the New.” (CCC 129)
Ultimately, the goal of the Shared Scripture Program is to encourage each baptized Catholic to recognize their role as an adopted son or daughter of the Father, through the Son, in the Spirit. Recognizing their precious status and seeing “what love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” (1John3:1), the students affirm their unique role in Salvation History as they imitate and recapitulate the life of Jesus Christ. In so doing, each student becomes His light - a living invitation drawing all persons out of the darkness and into the covenant communion that is His Catholic Church. Accordingly, our families, Parish, City, Church, and Nation shall be transformed by He who is the way, the truth and the life - Jesus Christ.
